National Cancer Survivors Day is June 3

Nearly 500 participants registered for “National Cancer Survivor’s Day: A Journey of Hope” to celebrate Northwest Indiana cancer survivors and their families.  The event is on Sunday, June 3 in Lowell at Hope Center/Lowell Church of Christ.

Check-in opens at 8 a.m.  Pre-paid participants can pick up wristbands for lunch and t-shirts at the check-in table.  (If we made a mistake, our volunteers will correct it as soon as possible. We apologize in advance for errors.)   Walk-ins are welcome to join us.  However, T-shirts and lunch ticket sales are closed.  After all preordered shirts have been picked up, additional T-shirts will be made available for sale.

Participants are welcome to change into their event t-shirts inside the church restroom facilities.

A 2.5 mile neighborhood walk through Lowell will begin at Hope Center at 9 a.m. to honor and celebrate cancer survivors.  Pastor Chuck has arranged a police escort!  The celebration is family-friendly. Participants are invited to decorate a wagon or stroller and make a home-made sign to honor survivors. Surviving family members are invited to make memorial signs to carry on the walk.

If you’d like to cut the route in half, that is possible!  Volunteers will point you in the right direction.

A water station will be at Moose Park.  Please dispose of your cups and water bottles appropriately.

Transportation for survivors who are unable to complete the walk route will be offered by volunteers. A message will be sent to participating survivors about this. Please let us know in advance if you would like to ride on a cart or in a convertible. (Space is limited.)

The community is invited to a 10:30 a.m. worship service at Lowell Church of Christ on June 3.  All faiths are welcome. Please bring your favorite outdoor chair or a picnic blanket!

Lunch will follow the service.  Participants will be directed inside the church for lunch.  Drinks, chips and cutlery will be located under the canopy, outside.  Participants are welcome to bring pop-up tents for shade.

Visit the Hope Center tent to learn more about cancer support programs.  Survivors are welcome to sit and visit in the Survivors Tent, located right next to the Hope Center tent.  Hope Center volunteers will have yellow butterfly name tags on.

National Cancer Survivors Day® is a day for everyone, whether a cancer survivor, a family member, friend, or medical professional.
